June 30 – July 2, 2023 Luminous Dharma will offer an in-person and online retreat on Pure Land chanting. The retreat will be donation based and held at Heart of Wisdom Zen Temple in Portland, Oregon as well as over Zoom. The retreat practice will be focused on chanting and inclining the mind toward Amitabha Buddha, the Buddha of infinite light.
This retreat is suitable for practitioners of all experience levels ranging from the curious to those with deep, long-time practice. Pure Land chanting practice is wonderful for those looking to realize deep samadhi and to directly experience Buddha nature. Amitabha Buddha represents and embodies the luminous and unborn nature inherent in all beings.
The Pure Land method of chanting and inclining the mind towards Amitabha Buddha is one of the most effective methods for many people. It is simple to practice and has many benefits.
- Pure Land practice leads to deep samadhi, yet does not require a long attention span and can work well even for those that are easily distracted.
- Pure Land chanting naturally inclines and connects the mind with inherent Buddha nature.
- Pure Land practice fits easily into chores and errands, changing postures, eating meals, etc.
- Kindness, compassion and bliss are naturally cultivated in Pure Land practice.
- Pure Land practice can be used to develop or strengthen the Bodhisattva vow and to ensure non-regression in Dharma practice.

- Friday, June 30 from 7:30p – 9p PT: Opening and instructional session. Zoom only (there will not be any in person option for this session).
- Saturday, July 1 from 9:30a – 4:30p PT: Full day retreat with breaks and an hour for lunch
- Sunday, July 2 from 1:00p – 4:30p PT: Final day and integration
Cost
This is a donation-based event. The suggested tuition to cover our base costs for running the event is $35. Give-what-you-can is available, everyone is welcome! (Pre-registration for the in-person venue is required, no walk-in’s please.)
