Using hearing as an anchor, identify and relax the “hearer”.
Simple
- Begin to directly experience hearing (including all heard sounds as well as silence) and/or the hearing of the high pitched background Śūraṅgama sound if it is perceivable.
- Continually allow the “hearer” to relax.
- Pay no special attention to any of the content of hearing, seeing, smelling, tasting, touching, or mind.
Detailed
- Place the body in a stable, alert and comfortable position. Begin relaxing the body from the top down to the ground.
- Begin to notice and directly experience hearing (including all heard sounds as well as silence) and/or the hearing of the high pitched background Śūraṅgama sound if it is perceivable.
- Stay with noticing and experiencing hearing and begin to notice any felt sense of a “hearer” or “experiencer” of hearing. Continually allow the “hearer” or “experiencer” to relax.
- Continually relax the “hearer” or “experiencer” and pay no special attention to any of the content of hearing, seeing, smelling, tasting, touching, or mind.
- This is not “ignoring”, but instead simply ceasing the effort required to try and pay attention to any phenomena that the “experiencer” experiences.
