Awareness of thought

Observing thoughts in the mental layer, they dissolve and vanish as they are known. When mind gets caught, expedient means are used to disperse the obscuration.

Simple

  • Relinquish all judgements and observe mind. As any thoughts occur, gently notice without moving the mind. Continually observe mind and be aware of any thought or mental movement that occurs.

Detailed

  • Set the body in a stable, alert and relaxed position, aligned with gravity, then relax the body from the top down. Leave the eyes slightly open, the breath natural and relaxed.
  • Begin to recite a mantra continuously such as:
    • Ga-te ga-te pa-ra-ga-te pa-ra-sam-ga-te bo-dhi sva-ha
      • Simply stay on the mantra without paying special attention to anything. Let thoughts naturally come and go when they appear.
  • Once the mantra gains momentum, cease recitation, relinquish all judgements and simply observe mind
  • As any thought occurs, gently notice awareness of it without moving the mind
  • As soon as there is awareness of it, it will naturally run its course, dissolve and vanish over time
  • Continually observe mind and be aware of any thought or mental movement that occurs.
