I thought it might be nice to compile a list of some of benefits of practicing the Pure Land Dharma door. While the practice itself can appear quite simple, the benefits are numerous.
- The straightforward nature of recitation practice lends itself to situations where we are tired, in pain, confused, etc.
- Fulfills the 3 aspects of Wise Intention by cultivating generosity, good-will and non-harm
- Aids in Wise Speech and Wise Action by keeping speech and action oriented on recollection of Amitābha Buddha. Upholding the precepts becomes much easier.
- Making wholesome decisions based around Wise Livelyhood is much easier when the mind is inclining towards recollection and recitation
- The 4 parts of Wise Effort are fulfilled by placing and keeping the mind on recitation practice. Unskillful mental states are abandoned and there is very little opportunity for the mind to wander into them.
- Wise mindfulness is naturally engaged during recitation by pronouncing the syllables clearly, directly experiencing hearing as Amitābha Buddha is recited, reciting on the inhale/exhale, etc.
- Regular diligent practice of recitation naturally leads to Wise Samādhi
- Discursive thoughts and the hindrances to cultivation are abandoned
- As Samādhi develops, the mind begins to know and see things as they truly are, cultivating the development of Wisdom
- The nature of breathing during recitations leads to a longer exhalation than inhalation
- Reciting out loud rings the body like a bell, massaging and opening the body up gently, and aiding in awareness across the whole body
- Energy, patience and diligence naturally develop through recitation practice
- Builds faith and encourages repentance
- Vexations are seen through
- The practice does not just rely on our own power, but draws upon the help of Amitābha Buddha and Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva
- Bodhicitta, the wish to awaken for the benefit of all sentient beings is cultivated
